Controversial Play, due to its unfavorable, and notably true, depiction
of Pope Pius XII, for remaining silent during the Holocaust. It was
famously Picketed, at the time of its original productions, with
considerable vitriol wherein the spectators threw eggs and fought the
actors! Directed and Produced by Herman Shumlin. Championed by Albert
Schweitzer at the time. Performed in more than 80 cities, translated
into more than 20 languages.
The play won The Young Generation
Playwright Award of the 1963 Berliner Kunstpreis and shared the Gerhard
Hauptmann prize of 1962.

Synopsis:
During WWII SS officer Kurt Gerstein tries to inform Pope Pius XII about
Jews being sent to extermination camps. Young Jesuit priest Riccardo
Fontana helps him in the difficult mission to inform the world.
At
the news of Rolf Hochuths passing, the German Central Council of Jews
paid tribute, stating that he had been a "courageous taboo breaker, who
touched off an overdue debate in Germany about the role of the church
during the nazi period."
Wow, this is in great condition. A few faint stains, nothing to fret over. Near Fine.
